Our Sunday School’s mission is to help children to develop their faith as they grow from childhood into adolescence. Castro Valley UMC has three Sunday School classes:
- Preschool-First Grade
- Grades 2-5
- Middle School (Grades 6-8)
The Preschool-Grade 1 class and the Grades 2-5 class use One Room Sunday School, which includes materials that children of various ages can study and learn together. Students will grow together through comprehensive Bible study, application of Bible lessons to everyday discipleship, and a variety of age-appropriate activities.
The Middle School class will be studying material that will teach the students about what it means to be a Christian and a member of the United Methodist Church, and students who complete this 8 week series of lessons will be eligible to be confirmed as members of the United Methodist Church. The members of this class will also study a variety of topical lessons about how to relate to their Christian faith to their daily lives; some sample topics are “Being Christian At School”, “Bullying And Gossiping”, “Growing Spiritually”, and “Talking With God”.
The Sunday School children participate in a Children’s Moment during the worship service before they are dismissed to go to their classes. The classes for children in preschool through grade 5 have a music period during the Sunday School hour, and the children sing the songs they learn during worship services from time to time. There are special activities in early September on Rally Day (the day when the new Sunday School year begins), at the beginning of the Christmas season, and at Easter. The offering which is taken during Sunday School is sent to organizations such as World Vision, Heifer Project International, or other Christian Relief agencies which assist needy families around the world.
